Course Descriptions:
Art
I – Grade Level 9 -12 Sending School MPCG
.5 credit Content:
Two-dimensional laboratory lessons, art background, and historical
understandings. Media includes graphite
pencil, charcoal, colored pencil, pastels, scratch board, linoleum prints and
sand panting.
Art II – Grade Level 10 -12 Sending School MPCG Pre-requisite: Art I
.5 credit Content: Basic concepts of art and practice in
utilization of the basic materials.
Includes drawing, painting and design using India ink, markers, water
colors, tempera paints, acrylics and oil paints.
Art I – Grade Level
9-12 Sending School Minto (Fundamentals of
Art) .5 credit The
basic concepts of art and the practice of using the basic materials will be
taught. An introduction of the elements and principles of art will be
addressed. Will include drawing, painting, design, and crafts. Students will
learn principles to use in creation of compositional works, by looking at
historical examples. Students will experiment with a variety of materials in
both two and three-dimensional form.
Art II – Grade Level 9-12 Sending School Minto .5 credit Two
and three-dimensional studio-type lessons, art background and historical
understanding. A deeper study of drawing, painting, and design will be done
using historical works as a reference point. Students will create their own
compositions using the elements and principles they learned in Art I. Projects
will be more in depth and more historical studies of style will be addressed.
Calculus – Grade Level 11 – 12 Sending School Valley
City High School Pre-requisite: Advance Math Courses 1 credit Career
Preparation: Professional Careers in Health and Human Services; Professional
Careers in Engineering and Industry; Professional Careers in Natural
Resources. You will do an in-depth study
of materials which includes Advanced Algebra, Plane Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus
and Analytic Geometry. In addition to
these topics, you will study probability and statistics and have the
opportunity to take an Advanced Placement mathematics test. Homework assignments may take a minimum of 45
minutes per day work outside of the classroom.
This class is intended for students planning to attend college and purse
mathematics related careers.
Cisco I & II – Grade Level 11 or 12 (12 recommended) Sending School Sheyenne Valley Area Vo-Tech Center 1 credit Students learn familiarity with
Cisco-brand networking equipment such as routers and switches. The students receive content on Local Area
Network configuration and will participate in hands-on labs to increase their
skill level. Students will receive
instruction on how to configure Cisco networking devises for use on a LAN or
WAN. Completion of the two semesters of
CCNA1 and CCNA 2 will help prepare students to take the Industry-level CISCO
Intro 640-821 and ICND 640-811 exams.
Homework is frequently. Reading
level is post-secondary (technical).
Curriculum is web based. Prerequisites: Networking + curriculum
training recommended but not required.
College Algebra – Grade Level 11 – 12 Sending School
Hatton 3 semester hours - Relations
and functions, equations and inequalities, complex numbers; polynomial,
rational, exponential and logarithmic functions; systems of equations, matrices
and determinants, sequences and summation.
Required of all elementary education and secondary education
majors. Pre-requisite: MATH 102 or equivalent High School students;
Algebra II.
English 110 – Grade Level 11 – 12 Sending School
Mayville State University 3 semester
hours - An introduction to traditional English grammar as the foundation of
modern prose style, leading to the understanding of the concepts of classical
Aristotelian deduction and generative rhetoric.
This approach teaches the logical structure of the sentence as well as
its editorial elements, such as usage, punctuation, and spelling. The structure of the sentence is used as a
model for constructing paragraphs and later multi-paragraph essays in the
various modes of organizational patterns of written expression. This course offers guided practice in
college-level writing and critical thinking, and appropriate IT skills.
English 120 - Grade Level
11 – 12 Sending School Mayville State University 3 semester hours - A
combination of print and electronic library research skills, taught in the
University Library with the cooperation of Library personnel and leading to the
concurrent writing of papers based on that research; also an introduction to
the social and cultural purposes of language and social and regional language
variation through the study of fiction, including an introduction to literary
analysis of the short story and the novel. This course expands on ENGL 110,
offering advanced practice in college-level writing from sources and in
applying rhetorical strategies. Pre-requisite: Successful completion of ENGL
110.
Fundamentals of Public
Speaking – Grade Level 11 – 12 Sending School Mayville State University 3
semester hours - This course
focuses on the theory and practice of discussing, informing, persuading, and
entertaining in a public speaking context, with appropriate use of graphic
presentation software and other current technologies. This general education
course prepares the student for active participation in oral communication not
only in the classroom, but also as a member of the community.
German I – Grade Level 10 -12 sending school MPCG and Northern Cass 1 credit - The first year of German is
designed to give the student a vocabulary of approximately 650 words. These would include topics such as colors,
numbers, calendars, classroom item, family, clothing, foods and mealtime customs,
telling tie, animals both wild and domestic, greetings, shapes, opposites, and
weather. While learning this vocabulary,
the student will study the culture and practice speaking and writing in German.
Health Careers – Grade Level 11 – 12 sending school Sheyenne Valley Area Vo-Tech Center 2 credits You will learn basic health care giving skills, applied
academics, professional development, leadership, and organizational
skills. Core skills are medical
terminology, anatomy, professional standards, safety, monitoring body
functions, disease prevention, CPR and First Aid Certification.
IT Essentials I (Computer Maintenance and Repair) –
Grade 11 – 12 (Grade 11 recommended) sending school Sheyenne
Valley Area Vo-Tech Center This course is designed to teach students how
to install, maintain and upgrade personal computer hardware and operating
system software. Students will be tasked
to diagnose, troubleshoot and repair issues involving personal computers,
laptops, printers and software.
Completion of the year-long course will help prepare students to take
the Industry-level COMPTIA A+ exams.
Homework is occasional. Reading
level is post-secondary (technical).
Curriculum is web based.
IT Essentials II (Network Operating Systems) Grade 11 – 12 (Grade 12 recommended) sending
school Sheyenne Valley Area Vo-Tech Center IT Essentials
II: Networking Operating Systems, sponsored by Hewlett-Packard Company is an
intensive introduction to multi-user, multi-tasking network operating
systems. Characteristics of the Linux,
Windows 2003, NT, XP and Netware network operation systems will be
discussed. Students will explore a
variety of topics including installation procedures, security issues, back up
procedures and remote access. This is a
year-long class that includes hands-on labs which utilize the Windows 2003,
Novell NetWare and Linux network operating systems. Completion of the course will help prepare
students to take the Industry-level COMPTIA Server + exam. Homework is often. Reading level is post-secondary
(technical). Curriculum is web
based. Prerequiste: IT Essentials I (Computer Maintenance and Repair)
Physics - Prerequisite Algebra II (Algebra III
recommended but not required.) Grades- 11-12 sending school Valley City High School
1 credit Students
will study a continuation of topics covered in physical science. This class will include motion problems,
heat, electricity, sound, light, gravitation and force. It is recommended for students entering a
college course of study involving math or science and particularly if entering
a field of engineering. Any student with
at least average grades in Algebra III course work will have success in this
class. The class uses Algebra and Trigonometry
skills.
Spanish I - Grade Level 9 -12 sending school: Thompson 1 credit
Student speech at this level
should be limited to simple statements and simple questions on very familiar
topics. Basic survival needs and minimum
courtesy requirements should be satisfied.
Students should comprehend standard language samples dealing with basic
needs, instructions and commands.
Students should be able to read material dealing with survival and
social needs and should write short messages within the scope of their limited
language experience.
