This course expands on ENGL 110, offering advanced practice in college-level writing from sources and in applying rhetorical strategies. Pre-requisite: Successful completion of ENGL 110.

This course focuses on the theory and practice of discussing, informing, persuading, and entertaining in a public speaking context, with appropriate use of graphic presentation software and other current technologies. This general education course prepares the student for active participation in oral communication not only in the classroom, but also as a member of the community.

To introduce students to bookkeeping principles.  A combination of subject matter and practice experiences concerned with elementary principles of accounting, accounting terminology, and basic knowledge necessary to keep a simple set of books.

Accounting II Grade Level: 10-12 Sending School: Larimore HS Credit: .5

Accounting II provides the students with detailed accounting knowledge.  Includes more complex accounting transactions and the preparation of financial statements.

AP Calculus Grade Level: 11-12 Sending School: Valley City HS Credit: 1.0

The main objective of this course is for students to receive a sound foundation in the study of calculus in order for them to be as successful as they can be in their future mathematics courses. Students are made aware early on in the course that they will be working harder than they have in the past to achieve success in AP Calculus. Homework assignments may take a minimum of 45 minutes per day work outside of the classroom. This class is intended for students planning to attend college and pursue mathematics related fields. At the completion of the course students will have the opportunity to take the AP exam and earn college credit for their coursework.

Two-dimensional laboratory lessons, art background, and historical understandings.  Media includes graphite pencil, charcoal, colored pencil, pastels, scratch board, linoleum prints and sand panting.

Basic concepts of art and practice in utilization of the basic materials.  Includes drawing, painting and design using India ink, markers, water colors, tempera paints, acrylics and oil paints.

Commercial Art I Grade Level: 10-12 Sending School: Sheyenne Valley Area Career and Tech Center HS Credit: 1

This program will provide students with an introduction to graphic design with an emphasis on fundamentals and the design process. Studies will include: design elements, design principles, typography, photography and digital enhancement and manipulation. Student will be utilizing photoshop and corel draw computer programs.

Computer Hardware and Operating Systems Grade Level: 10-12 Sending School: Sheyenne Valley Area Career and Tech Center HS Credit: 1

This course is designed to teach students how to install, maintain and upgrade personal computer hardware and operating system software. Students will be tasked to diagnose, troubleshoot and repair issues involving personal computers, laptops, printers and software.  Completion of the year-long course will help prepare students to take the Industry-level COMPTIA A+ exams.  Homework is occasional.  Reading level is technical. Curriculum is web based.

Fund. of Web Design (Microsoft Expressions Web 2) Grade Level: 9-12 Sending School: Sheyenne Valley Area Career and Tech Center HS Credit: 1

Introduction to Web Development; is an introductory semester long course in the planning, interviewing design and development of a web site.  Students will learn how to design, develop and maintain content within Dreamweaver.  They will learn ways to add typical interface components and how to use Fireworks for creating optimal images for the Web. You will learn how to organize and manage your prototypes and how to easily organize Web pages and layers.

German I Grade Level: 10-12 Sending School: MayPort CG HS Credit: 1

The first year of German is designed to give the student a vocabulary of approximately 650 words.  These would include topics such as colors, numbers, calendars, classroom item, family, clothing, foods and mealtime customs, telling tie, animals both wild and domestic, greetings, shapes, opposites, and weather.  While learning this vocabulary, the student will study the culture and practice speaking and writing in German.

German II Grade Level: 10-12 Sending School: MayPort CG HS Credit: 1

Students at this level should formulate more complex questions and demonstrate more basic skills.  Topics including personal history and leisure time activities should be mastered orally.  Comprehension of items along these same themes should be demonstrated in conversations.  Students should be able to read more complex passages including announcements, advertising, and narration.  Writing skills should include short paragraphs that show a good control of basic constructions and inflections.

Health Careers Grade Level: 10-12 Sending School: Sheyenne Valley Area Career and Tech Center HS Credit: 1

You will learn basic health care giving skills, applied academics, professional development, leadership, and organizational skills.  Core skills are medical terminology, anatomy, professional standards, safety, monitoring body functions, disease prevention, CPR and First Aid Certification.

Introduction to Networking Grade Level: 10-12 Sending School: Sheyenne Valley Area Career and Tech Center HS Credit: 1

Students learn about Cisco-brand networking equipment such as routers and switches, Local Area Network configuration and will participate in hands-on labs to increase their skill level.  Students will receive instruction on how to configure Cisco networking devises for use on a LAN or WAN.  Completion of the two semesters of CCNA1 and CCNA 2 will help prepare students to take the Industry-level CISCO Intro 640-821 and ICND 640-811 exams.  Homework is frequently.  Reading level is post-secondary (technical).  Curriculum is web based.

Introduction to Programming Visual Basic 8 Express Grade Level: 10-12 Sending School: Sheyenne Valley Area Career and Tech Center HS Credit: 1/2

Introduction to Visual Basic; is and semester course to learn the basics of programming language.  The students will utilize the Visual Basic software. Visual Basic is considered a relatively easy to learn and use programming language, because of its graphical development features. Visual Basic was derived from BASIC and enables the rapid application development of graphical user interface applications and access to databases.

Medical Terminology Grade Level: 10-12 Sending School: Sheyenne Valley Area Career and Tech Center HS Credit: .5 or 1

This class is designed to introduce students to the health information technology field. Students will learn prefixes, suffixes and root words for medical terms. This will include meanings, spellings and pronunciations. Emphasis is on building a working medical vocabulary based on body systems. Anatomy and physiology of major organs, pathological conditions, laboratory studies, clinical procedures and abbreviations are studies for each body system. The student will also learn medical terminology as it relates to pathology, diagnostic, surgical, clinical and laboratory procedures, and common abbreviations and acronyms by body systems.

Spanish I Grade Level: 10-12 Sending School: Thompson HS Credit: 1

Student speech at this level should be limited to simple statements and simple questions on very familiar topics.  Basic survival needs and minimum courtesy requirements should be satisfied.  Students should comprehend standard language samples dealing with basic needs, instructions and commands.  Students should be able to read material dealing with survival and social needs and should write short messages within the scope of their limited language experience.

Spanish II Grade Level: 11-12 Sending School: Thompson HS Credit: 1

This course involves students Spanish speaking, reading, and writing skills are reinforced and expanded through more involved activities and complex selections. Less emphasis is placed on pattern drill and more on free response. Hispanic culture, literature, and history are explored more in depth.
